Moving Through Depression with Sandy Boivin

Moving Through DepressionMany researches have proven that physical exercise could increase your mental health as well as your physical, and giving you better sense of well-being. Sandy Boivin, a Canadian woman who was hospitalized herself due to depression 10 years ago, dedicates herself to prevent other women experience the same thing.

Since last Saturday, she has started “Moving Through Depression” in Winsor, Ontario; an exercise class specifically designed to help women get free from depression. The class is currently attended by a group of women aged between 30 to 55 years old, all of them either have the history of depression, or in the middle of treatment due to depression.

Postpartum Depression MotherhoodSome women might have been familiar with the term ‘baby blues’. It is the mood swings women experience after having a baby, that they may feel a little depressed, have a hard time concentrating, lose their appetite and have insomnia. The baby blues are considered a normal part of early motherhood and usually go away within 10 days after delivery. However, women with more severe symptoms that last longer than a few days are presumed as having Postpartum Depression (PPD).

There is no exact reason known on why women get postpartum depression. But it is recognized that during pregnancy and right after childbirth there are changes in the level of hormones. Those hormone changes may produce chemical changes in the brain that play a part in causing depression.

This depression later affect the quality of life and include:
- Feeling sad or down often
- Frequent crying or tearfulness
- Feeling restless, bad-tempered or anxious
- Loss of interest or pleasure in life
- Loss of appetite, which lead to weight loss
- Less energy and motivation to do things
