Remember Kenneth Cole’s backfired attempt of joking ? In a desperate attempt to boost up the spring sale, Kenneth Cole had decided to send a ‘fresh’ joke to Twitter, taking the liberty from the most recent issue : political riot in Cairo. It said, “Millions are in uproar in Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is available online.”

Of course, instead of rising the sale, that misplaced joke had invited admonishments from many people, who thought that the joke was inappropriate.

Humor is one of the best way to cope from the stress, and people with good sense of humor often get many benefits physically, socially, and psychologically. Making jokes is also applied by many professionals for a successful ice-breaking before a presentation, or to relieve the tension in the middle of serious meeting. However, since I am sure that you do not want to repeat Kenneth Cole’s Twitter disaster, there are some things you have to keep in mind about making jokes.

First, find the right time to throw your jokes. Do not throw jokes in the middle of events like visiting someone who is suffering a serious ailment, funeral, or in front of someone who is clearly distraught.

Do not try to look smart without actually thinking. Clever jokes about history or politic are often appreciated widely, but there are some topics that might be sensitive for many, like religion. Try to avoid that kind of topic as best as possible, except when you are really sure that that will be appropriate.

Special physical conditions, uncommon skin colors, or various body shapes might be easy to be the target of jokes, but they are actually a big no in that department. We deal in people’s feelings here, so no matter how funny is someone looked in your eyes, never make jokes about physical appearances.
