Exercise Your Brain With Music
You might want to bring a CD player to your next exercise session if you want to get stronger and smarter. A recent study conducted by Ohio State University suggests that working out to music builds brainpower as well as strength and stamina.
During the study, 33 patients in the last few weeks of a cardiac rehabilitation program listened to Vivaldi???s “The Four Seasons” as they walked on a treadmill. When they were tested on verbal fluency, their score was twice as high as others who walked without musical accompaniment.
Why does music and exercise boost your intelligence? Charles Emery, a psychology professor at Ohio State, explained that “exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system, and these changes may have a direct effect on cognitive ability.” You don???t need to listen to classical music to reap this reward, either ??? Shania Twain or U2 should work just as well!
